3D-printed implants significantly improve bone growth. Specifically, 3D-printing is improving the adherence and growth of bone cells on implants. Because 3D-printing allows us to control shapes and structures, we can create porous titanium implants. These particular features on these implants could never be achieved with traditional manufacturing. With the larger pores, comes the opportunity to speed up healing and the implant now becomes a part of the active healing process. In turn, with more space for the bone to grow compared to traditional implants, bone cells will latch onto each other through the pores of the implant. With this same technology, the roughness of the implant can also be controlled and thoughtfully designed.
