As one’s body ages, the bones and cartilage that make up their joints naturally wear and tear. When this happens in the spine, this wear and tear can affect the discs and vertebrae. For instance, most people’s spinal discs begin drying out and shrinking by the age of 40. Age also affects the exterior of the spinal discs, leading to cracks appearing and herniated discs. Both of these factors allow more bone-on-bone contact between the vertebrae, which can cause pain for the individual.
In the neck area specifically, the wear and tear of the spinal anatomy due to aging is known as cervical spondylosis. The cervical disc dehydrates and shrinks, and signs of osteoarthritis develop in the joints in the cervical spine. Such signs include a bony spur forming, the disc space narrowing, and the actual disc bulging. The disc space narrowing and bulging discs are particularly important because discs act as cushions between the vertebrae of the spine. Not only does this combination result in less support for the vertebrae, but the bulging discs can also sometimes press on the spinal cord and nerve roots as well. Sometimes, the pain from cervical spondylosis can require surgery. SAGICO has a wide range of products for surgeons to use in performing surgeries in the cervical spine to treat spondylosis. All of our products are designed for the efficiency of the surgeon and the safety of the patient.
