As reported in Spine Deformity, G. Ying Li and a team of researchers analyzed surgical outcomes of 59 preadolescents with early-onset neuromuscular scoliosis treated with spinal fusion surgery. 43 out of 59 of these patients had previously undergone growth-friendly surgeries. The study’s authors found that the single spinal fusion surgery had set the patients up for a greater curve correction than the alternative surgeries. Spines that were 50% straighter compared to the patients who had received growth-friendly treatment first. Thus, for kids with severe scoliosis, growth-friendly surgeries cause more complications than single spinal fusion, according to new research.
