Pseudoarthrosis describes what happens when a spinal fusion is unsuccessful. Being a smoker dramatically increases your risk of pseudoarthrosis. Some spine surgeons will not even operate on smokers (not taking into account those cases in which one’s life would be in danger without this surgery). Smoking can decrease the rate of fusion by a third, or 33%, according to surgeons Steven Ondra and Shaden Marzouk in their article “Revision Strategies for Lumbar Pseudarthrosis.” The reason why smoking is so detrimental to the healing process is because smoking constricts one’s blood vessels. In turn, this constriction limits and slows the healing process. If one is a nonsmoker and experiencing a spine disease like this one, surgery could be a good option for treatment. SAGICO products are excellent options to help treat degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, trauma, spinal stenosis, curvatures, tumors, pseudoarthrosis, and failed previous fusion.
